Over the past year, we’ve been quietly adding new features to MailPoet that better integrate our plugin with WooCommerce. If you’re already a MailPoet user, you may have noticed — and hopefully used and enjoyed! — some of these new features.
Today, we want to tell you all about these WooCommerce features, and how you can use MailPoet to improve your WooCommerce emails.
A large chunk of our users have WooCommerce installed on their sites — 25%, in fact — and every month 1,000 new users with WordPress sites that have WooCommerce enabled sign up for MailPoet.
So while it’s important to us that you’re able to send beautiful newsletters to your store’s subscribers, we also want to help you send better WooCommerce emails with MailPoet.
If you haven’t yet tried the WooCommerce features now available in MailPoet, you’ll be delighted to know they are free to use for stores with less than 1,000 customers.

See how much revenue you’ve earned per email
Did that email you sent about your Black Friday sale persuade subscribers to make a purchase on your WooCommerce site? You ought to know!
In fact, whenever you send a coupon, you’ll be curious to find out how well it worked. We see coupons a lot, like in this WooCommerce case study & in our strategies to sell more.
We’ve added revenue statistics to MailPoet so you can track which emails have contributed to your revenue.
For each email you send subscribers, you can view open, click-through, revenue, and unsubscribe stats.
How does this feature work? When an order is processed, MailPoet checks to see if the customer clicked on a MailPoet email in the past 14 days. If they did, the email gets the credit for converting the customer.
Automate your WooCommerce email marketing
MailPoet now offers 4 types of automated emails for WooCommerce.
Abandoned Shopping Cart – Send a series of abandoned cart reminders to customers who leave your WooCommerce site without completing their purchase. Read our complete guide on the best practices with examples of abandoned cart emails to get you started.
First Purchase – Send an email to customers who make their first purchase, such as a “Thank you!” email. This email can be set to send immediately, days, or weeks after the initial purchase. Check out our guide to improving customer loyalty with first purchase emails.
Purchased In This Category – Send an email to customers who purchased a product from a specific category in your store. For example, you may want to send a promotional email to all customers who purchased a pair of shoes.
Purchased This Product – Send an email to customers who purchased a specific product. This is ideal if you want to send a coupon, a cross-sell email, or specific instructions related to the product.
Why send automated emails to your customers? As your WordPress business grows, so too does the amount of work involved. Everything from marketing and lead generation to launching new products and building customer relationships takes time.
Fortunately, email automation lets you automate repetitive tasks.

Invite customers to join your mailing list at checkout
Want an easy way to grow your store’s email list? With MailPoet, you can now automatically add all your WooCommerce customers with or without accounts (i.e. guest shoppers) to a dedicated email list named “WooCommerce Customers.”
At checkout, customers will be given the option to join your mailing list. A GDPR notice will be displayed underneath.
If you’re using MailPoet for the first time, we’ll ask you to confirm that you have your subscribers’ consent to start sending them emails. We do this to ensure MailPoet users are following GDPR standards.
Only send to engaged subscribers (and keep your list clean!)
It’s important that you only send emails to customers who actively open your emails and are engaged with your online store. If engagement with your email list drops, so too will your open rates.
MailPoet provides an inactive customers feature you won’t find in other email plugins. Essentially, it prevents you from sending emails to inactive subscribers, ensuring your emails are only sent to subscribers who want to receive emails from you so your open rates remain high.
How does this feature work? When this feature is enabled, MailPoet will stop sending your emails to all subscribers who have not opened any of your emails in the past 6 months. This feature can be configured to 3 months or 12 months, and even disabled altogether.

Add WooCommerce products to emails

Segment customers who purchase products or from categories
Segmentation lets you break your email list isn’t small, more meaningful emails lists (aka segments) that let you target specific groups of subscribers.
With MailPoet, you can segment customers who have:
Why would you want to segment these customers? Say, for example, you’re about to hold a 20% off sale on all headphones in your store. You may want to send an email targeting customers who have purchased from the “audio” category on your site.
Email segmentation is about breaking your one big email list into meaningful and useful segments based on different criteria. It’s also about better catering to different groups of subscribers by sending them emails that speak to their interests and habits, rather than sending one big email that a big chunk of your subscribers will simply ignore.

WooCommerce features we would like to develop
There are lots of WooCommerce features we would like to add to MailPoet, and here are some we are considering:
- Redesign and send WooCommerce transactional emails (committed for fall 2019) Update: it’s here!
- Add more types of segments
- Display unique coupons in emails
- Display shopping cart contents in email

Email: The biggest challenge for WooCommerce store owners
We think the biggest challenge is providing a unified email experience for that brings email marketing automation, standard newsletters, and transactional emails together in a way that’s easy for store owners to manage. You can see this in our complete guide for WooCommerce emails.
Currently, WooCommerce store owners must have several different plugins for transactional and marketing emails. There are third-party solutions, such as Jilt, Mailchimp and others that can help you manage your store’s email needs.
But this means you have to switch between different plugins, browser tabs, and platforms, and the result is an inconsistent email experience along with inconsistent branding in your emails.
It’s a challenge we’re figuring out and working towards solving.
